Icons Of Modern Saints

I´ve felt the need to celebrate and immortalize my dead heroes, other than just in a RIP-post on Instagram. The idea of the icons started to grow when I was watching a Chris Rock show where his mom had Biggie, 2Pac and Jesus on the mantel piece.

My girlfriend being Greek, I´ve been surrounded by orthodox icons and was always struck by their beauty. So I thought, why not combine the classic and the modern? I experimented with various materials for some time, until I stumbled upon some broken sk8’s in the studio a friend had left when changing his setup. Not only could I immortalize the icons of my culture, but I could also give eternal life to dead sk8´s. A way to extend the tradition of orthodox icons that usually was painted on scrap wood, in my own way.

The technique; mounted photographs on spray painted dead skateboard decks, decorated with distinct SuperDrops, elevates the artform of icon-painting into a another, new level.
